Haven't posted in a while. Not sure why, life is just a bit boring right now, I suppose.

Have been watching American Idol. Am I the only one who's sick of Paula and Simon? And even, to an extent, of Ryan and Randy? They seem to have forgotten that the show is about the singers, not the judges, not the host. They spend so much time with their little 'in-jokes' and teasing each other and all. I'm sick of it. It's like they think the show is either a joke, in which case they need to pack it in and get another judge/host/whatever, or they think it's their showcase. Which, I suppose, it has become.

Everyone in the audience waits for their first chance to boo Simon. The more they boo, the meaner he gets. "I don't mean to be rude..." Well, yes, in fact, he does. I'm not saying he should sugarcoat his opinions, not in the slightest, good lord, then we'd have TWO PAULAS and I would have to kill myself. Ah, I don't know.

And speaking of Paula. Does she have a clue what she's doing? She has no opinion of her own, she just parrots Randy Jackson most of the time. She says the same things over and over, ad nauseum.

And speaking of over and over....DO NOT USE THE WORD 'RELEVENT' ANYMORE, NOT ANY OF YOU. Are yo listening to me? Once was okay. The second time was amusing. Now it's irritating.

And Ryan goads them all on, so he's in on the conspiracy. Seriously, I'm only a few more snarky in-jokes away from not watching anymore.

Now, the contestants. Too early to say much, I suppose. Danny Noriega is obnoxious, I hope he does not make the Top 12. I quite like the Aussie, Michael Johns, and quite a few of the other guys. Not so much any of the women. Little Miss Sunshine irritates the hell out of me. Brooke, I think?

My Top 12 of who's left?

Hmm...female. Carly, Ramiele, Amanda, Syesha, Asia'h, Kristy Lee
Male...Chikizie, David Archuleta, David Hernandez, Michael, Luke, David Cook

And who besides me thinks Luke Menard looks just a bit like Orlando Bloom? This fact, is, I think, good enough to keep him on the show. At least, for the happiness of my hormones, it is.

I think he liked it more than I am, but it's okay. Finished Samurai Champloo. Absolutely loved it. Immediately ordered Jin and Mugen and Fuu action figures to add to my ninja collection, though Fuu is not a ninja. And as point of fact, neither are Jin and Mugen, being samurai rather than ninja. But hell, it's my collection.

Also ordered an Ed Elric/Roy Mustang wall scroll to hang next to my Kakashi wall scroll.

Yes, I am over 40. Can you tell?

(I wonder why they don't make Alan Rickman/Viggo Mortensen wall scrolls?)

Took daughter's knee to the orthopedic doc. Made daughter come with it, as knee is somewhat shy. He said it was (and I'm using Hooked on Phonics here...) conjugal Malaysia. Which is not, apparently, people having sex somewhere in the East, but something do with tendons and bones and ligaments all growing at different rates. (should have made him write it down, yes?) (daughter said, but mom, you nodded like you knew what he was saying!)

However, he thinks there may be more at work than just that whatever-its-real-name-is, so we waiting for a pre-cert for an MRI.

He was quite rude, really. <lj:music>ice tapping on windowpanes</lj:music>

Most of the storm seems to have slipped by to the north. But I'm
sitting in the living room right now listening to the sleet. The
driveway looks like a inch or so of ice is on it. I'm supposed to go
to work for 7 a.m. and I'm wondering if I'll make it in. Haven't seen
a plow go by yet, but I've only been up about 15 minutes. Hopefully a
sand truck will go through.

The problem is that they're probably plowing and sanding the main
roads, but our road is always left until after the storm passes, in
general. In a bad snowstorm, the plows might make a few passes during
the storm, but this isn't a snowstorm, at least not here. So if I
could make it to Highland Ave, a total of about five hundred yards,
I'd probably be fine, but honestly? Sometimes I can't make it that
far. We'll see. I won't even try until about 6:30 or so.

Did all my wrapping yesterday. I couldn't find my gift tags, so I
simply wrapped everyone's gifts in different paper so I'd remember
later which was to who, heh.

Ah, well. I'm a bit nauseous right now, so I think I'll put off
breakfast for now. I have time for an episode or two of Samurai
Champloo....

Just finished re-reading Green Rider and First Rider's Call, both by Kristin Britain. All so I could read the beautiful, BIG new copy of her latest, The High King's Tomb. Which I did. Which was excellent. Get thee to a bookstore and purchase. So good. (horsies!!!)

High King's Tomb was the first book I read from my huge sport bag of books I brought back from World Fantasy. (I cannot believe how many books I bought...never mind the free ones!)

So I have this BAG of books. I have my older, still massive PILE of books. I have a smallish, three shelf BOOKCASE of books. These are my TBR books. (to-be-read)

So from the PILE I choose...A Nose For Trouble, by Doranna Durgin. Baaawhoooo!!

On the PDA - Fire and Dust, by James Gardner. (you can read it for free, here) It's a hoot!

And I have taken out of the BAG, and brought upstairs to begin whilst putting children to sleep, Goblin Quest, by Jim C. Hines.

(Shogun has been relegated to the bathroom sink. I'm having a hard time getting into it. I'm reading Naruto, Prince of Tennis, Hikaro no Go, Shaman King, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Bleach. (Well, lots more, really, I love the stuff, I truly do.
I love rain. Today it is gray, chill, and rainy. I got to sleep until after 7 o'clock, which is fairly amazing. My kids are not fighting. My back doesn't ache. All in all, good times are rolling.

My father-in-law died Thursday evening. He'd been ill for years, with Parkinson's and various other health issues. He's lived in a nursing home for 6 or 7 years. It was just his time, apparently, and he's out of pain and out of the nursing home, which he hated. He cried when they told him he'd have to stay there permanently, way back when. He's better off.

That's what everyone is saying.

Bullshit.

My FIL loved life. Even if he was in pain, he still loved life. He would not have wanted to say goodbye, or to move on. Yeah, he wanted out of the nursing home, but not out of life.

It sucks.

In a odd twist, the day before he died, my daughter, his granddaughter, wrote this poem:

DARK TEARS

As you walk down the street
You will see all the tears.
As you pass by the cemetery
You may have to peer
In through the gates
To see what's going on.
You may cover your face
And weep into your palm,
For you know someone has gone
Straight to the next life,
And you think that it's wrong.

But,
That's just life.

Just finished Flag in Exile, by David Weber, the fifth of the Honor Harrington books. It took me forever to read, honestly. Five months? Is that sad, or what? And it wasn't the book. I really wanted to know what happened. I love Honor, I do. I finally figured out it was the religious aspect of the story. I just hated it, just as I hate religious fanaticism in real life. I would get to a long part about what the creeps were feeling and thinking, their bile spewing out, and I would put the book down and walk away again. (well, shut off the PDA, actually)

Once I figured that out, I just skipped all those parts until the action began again. And once that part was done, we were able to get to the space battle part, which IMO, was the best part.

Now to score number six. While I'm waiting for that, I'm reading The Apocalypse Troll, also by David Weber, but not of the Honor Harrington series. I was reluctant to start one of his that wasn't Honor, afraid I would get the storylines confused, but as soon as I started the first chapter I knew it wouldn't be a problem. It's a different story, with a different heroine, and so far I'm loving it.

I never did finish Lake Wobegone Days. I gave up.

I'm also reading Shogun, by James Clavell, for the first time. I read Tai-pan and King Rat, and Noble House way back when and loved them, but never, for who only knows what reason, read Shogun. So I am.

With my son, we're up the the ninth Oz book, The Scarecrow of Oz.
